XT1 LT42E (2021) Features

Specs & Maintenance

Product Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good so far My first lawn tractor and tough 2 acre meadow grass. Only used about 20 hours so far, starts and runs flawlessly. Thankfully mows down 8 inch dry grass and taller heavy weeds. Easy to drop mower deck to clean and sharpen blades. I don’t bag. I pull a wagon and fertilizer spreader, no problems. Wish the suspension were better as jolting over molehills everywhere on property. I figure it’s really designed for lawns not farm land but it works for me. Really nice not having noise, smell, maintenance of internal combustion. Time will tell if dependable on rough land but seems to work well if you take it slow. The charging input connector plug could be better designed, but it works, just make sure it’s fully seated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst cut ever [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had this Electric mower for a couple of months. I'm delighted with the Electric tractor, absolutely no problems, However, it does the worst job of cutting grass evenly of any mower I've ever owned! The deck "floats" and consequently moves left & right, Up & down, leaving strange patterns all over the lawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new work horse I purchased the LT42E in March ‘21 and took delivery in April. It replaced a 10 year old John Deere lawn tractor. The LT42E has done everything I did with the JD, and it has done it with ease and relative quiet and no fuss. I have a 4 acre property which is about 60% wooded and on a hill side. It has done a fine job mowing the portions I keep mowed. I have hauled cart loads of dirt, landscaping blocks, firewood, and garden produce easily. I have the snowplow attachment and have quietly kept my 70 yard-long driveway cleared. It has done everything I have asked of it with ease, quietly, and without fumes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from XT1 LT42e. Starting issues This is a new unit. Used 1 time, then had error codes, mower would not start, service said a battery was bad. Ordered, replaced. Charged battery, used 1 time again, charge was at 84%. Saw the 3 lights on the display flash a few times, still seemed like it had a charge. Tried to start today, no display, no beeps, did not start. Charged unit for a few minutes until the charger no longer flashed. Still no display, will not start. very frustrating, hard to get answers or support.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not at all ready for prime time! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After about 4 months of use, a controller board went on it. We waited 4 months for part to come in, Not CubCadet's fault, the whole world is having supply chain problems, but why go bad so soon after purchase?? Then we had an accident, hit a rock, our fault, but still were without the tractor for 3 months due to supply chain problems. Today, something else went wrong, only one of the blades is cutting, so is it here we go again?? When this mower works, it is awesome, but I believe there are serious quality issues, as others attest to here. Do not recommend buying it until the quality comes up substantially.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Seemed like a good idea Bought not quite 2 years ago. Loved it until error codes popped up. No info on what they are or how to fix. I spent hours searching the internet for help. I called customer service for help and spent 1 hr and 10 min on hold. Service rep sent me info on my codes 121/129. No local repair shops with the electric training, or if they do have it, don't want to fool with it. So what now? I have 21 hours on this mower, over 4k spent. If no one will repair it, I want a refund or a replacement. It should be covered under warranty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only a few good cuts then, I gave up. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought it a year ago and have had nothing but problems with it. The PTO had to be recalibrated. I cut the grass last week, recharged the battery, tried to start it up again, no power. I plugged it back in again for a few more hours. Still no power. Use my old case number 06477685.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Service for electric mowers [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the electric 42 riding mower and it just sits in the service department of the dealer. It stopped working all together and the service recommended by Cub Cadet does not get any support from Cub Cadet. For a month it just sits there. I liked it when it ran. Well there many minor problems such as the steering gear breaking, the motor ceasing up, electrical connections going bad, and foot switch needing to be cleaned of dust from leaves, keeping mower from moving. Only use it for part of the yard and just odd jobs. Have been using my more rrliable electric 54" Ryobi ZRT for most of the yard.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wanted to like this mower. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The more I use it the more disappointed I am. No power to finish the job. Can't get through the lawn without needing to recharge it. Not much power. I have 20 hours on it, so I gave been using it. Errors are starting to pop up. It has a poor deck design. Can't really clean it without taking it off if the mower. I would but it again. Very poor quality for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall, a great lawn tractor. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great lawn tractor with a few issues. This mower cuts great and performs ever bit as good as gas lawn tractors without the noise and gasoline related issues. I like the fact that this is built and looks like a regular lawn tractor. There are a few issues. There are no arm rests available for the newer version of this tractor, hopefully some will be available soon. The biggest issue is not being able to was the mower and deck. These get dirty, the tires get clogged with undesirable materials, and the underside of the deck collects grass cuttings that trap moisture. Blowing it of with the blower does not work well enough, and removing the deck after each mowing session is impractical. The electrical components should be sealed will enough to allow for normal washing of the mower. However, overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and recommend this lawn tractor.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Welcoming Myself to the Club [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this XT1 42E mower and had it delivered to the house on 3/30/21. Trying to go all electric as it's the wave of the future. Trimmers, edgers, hand mover are all electric and working fine (Kolbalt). Very cool looking Cub Cadet mower and worked great right up until this weekend. My yard is about 1/2 acre and flat. Went out to start it and nothing. Worked fine the weekend before. Stored in the garage at all times. Had 4 error codes all starting with 7. Charge showed 100%. Tried it throughout the weekend with same results. Has 9.3 run hours. Called all the service centers in a 30 mile radius and all said they don't work on electric riding lawn mowers. Called Cub Cadet and they are "searching" for a service center that will work on them. Will update as the process moves forward.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great features. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this 42' electric rider with great expectations. But when delivered to my house, I was unable to use it - there was no key ! After corresponding with HomeDepot with no luck (they could find none of the keys for either their electric tracker or zero-turn models), I called CC. I was told that there was a wait-list for the keys (unique as they are) and I could not expect one until mid to late July - almost two months waiting period. HomeDepot came to pick it up for a full refund. I am pretty sure that the primary fault lay with HD - somehow they lost or misplaced all their keys for those models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Mower-Things you should know [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This mower is underrated. This is a completely different experience than a traditional gas mower. I mow 1/2-.75 acres on a hillside and charge the mower every 4-5 mowings. The mower is very stable on the hill. I have not experienced any errors with the mower when following the manufacturer's instructions on charging it. When I did get an error messing with it, I waited 30 seconds reconnected, and it worked as it should. The mower itself has more torque than my gas mower ever did and the cut is nice and level. You can adjust the deck to fine-tune it as well. The forward and reverse pedal takes some getting used to, but within 5-10 minutes you are good to go. I have the deck setup to mulch and have no issues with it powering right through everything.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Repair I bought this a few months ago, I hit a stone and it disengaged the deck mower blade. It took several months to get that part , very pricey $400 I wish they had a YouTube video showing how to disconnect and reinstall this part . I will do my best once I get the part ! , to do a video on this and hopefully it will be helpful . I wish club cadet was more informative on schematics Shaolin how to take this part apart .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bagger sucks, but the tractor is pretty cool! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my second one. The first one had a power distribution module burn up and due to Covid, the parts weren’t available to fix it. Cub cadet made it right by refunding my money. I bought a 2nd one and I still like it, a lot. I have close to 2 acres and some of it is pretty rough terrain, it handles it all. I took a star off due to the bagger, like other reviews, clogs up before the bags get 1/4 full. It sucks. I may try a high-lift blade and see if that helps. But otherwise, if you need to bag your clippings up, this is not for you!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was great until it wasn't [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was very excited to use the LT42E that I purchased last Fall. I only mowed 3-4 times last year before putting the mower away for the Winter. I was thrilled with the performance and capability of the tractor. I could not wait to start mowing this year, and I have mowed 3 weeks already, The mower has 2.5 hrs on it. I plugged it in for a charge yesterday and after a full charge cycle, I removed the plug and started getting E702, E705 and E715 error codes and the mower has not started since. Very disappointed. It seems this mower is new enough that there aren't many resources to help with these particular codes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Convenience and Power I bought this tractor last year after my trusty wheel horse ran into some electrical issues. I have already upgraded all my other garden equipment to battery and was thrilled to see the LT42e has a good look like a real garden tractor. Even though electric motors produce torque immediately, I was very concerned about the power of the tractor because I use it to pull a cart of wet leaves, drag smallish logs/branches etc. Also, my yard is terraced with steep short inclines in areas. I was really concerned LT42e would not be able to get up them without running out of juice. However, my concerns quickly diminished. This tractor has plenty of power to get up my hills even with a wet a cart of heavy leaves. I bought the mulching blades and they cut well in high grass. I have the fast attach double bagger and used it to pick up the leaves in the fall. It worked great for my needs! The tractor is quite fast at maximum speed and has tons of torque. It turns on a dime compared to my wheel horse. It is fun to use and very convenient. Pricey too, but I do not regret the purchase. I am somewhat concerned about the battery longevity but the fact that it is lithium ion finalized my decision to buy as I have had great longevity with this type of battery with my power tools. The model has typical tractor ride. Ive seen people complain about a harsh ride but their tires are probably overinflated, reduce the tire pressure and it will ride gentler. It is quiet with the mower blades disengaged but with the blades engaged it is not what I would consider quiet, but not too loud either. Think of 2 industrial fans spinning at high speed. In summary, this tractor is awesome, and my hat is off to Cub Cadet for making it happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mower. Quiet yet powerful. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Purchased this mower due to hip problems and I wish I had sooner. The silent ride is cool and the sound of the blades are awesome. It gives a nice even cut and has plenty of pick up. Lots of power to manage hills/slopes. I do have one small section that may be too steep and for safety reasons I have not attempted yet. I may get brave and try to negotiate that hill once I become more familiar with the mowers capabilities. The battery is strong and for my 1/2 acre I can get 3 to 4 cuts before charging

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 100% satisfied. Exceptional quality. Smooth ride [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Extremely satisfied. Very fast. I cut all my lawn in less than two hours and I still have more than 50% of the battery left. It charges in a few hours. Great quality. Easy to use. No maintenance needed. Easy to clean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from After 1 year, holds up well, but some lessons lear [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this mower last August (2021) for our on-a-hill 1.6 acre property. Initially I was just ejecting grass from the side (which is a bit of a mess to work with, and I don't like the "lines of grass clippings" look), then switch to mulching blades late last season. With mulching blades on, there are two major side effects: it takes a *lot* more power to run, and, unless the grass is parched and dead, the inside of the deck cakes up with grass really quickly. One additional effect that I found more recently, is that grass (which flies all over when mulching) also gets into the mechanical works of the machine, and needs to be cleaned out of places where human hands can't easily reach. More on that later. First, power. I could mow our entire property, front and back, on a single charge with the high-lift (standard) blades and side-ejecting. It was always "close", ending at 5-10% left (note that at 5% left the blades shut off so there is battery left to drive home). When I purchased the mulching kit and installed it, I was instantly only able to get through about half the yard (either the front yard or the back yard) before having to return to the shop and recharge for four hours. So now, with mulching on, I need two sunny days in the "growing season" to get through the whole lawn (I need to mow later in the day so the grass is more dried out, otherwise the next issue is exacerbated). Not a huge deal, but it would really be nice to be able to have a swap-out battery like some other manufacturers use so it could all be done without the 4-hour intermission. Second, grass accumulation is horrible. I use a high-power leaf blower to get everything off the top and deck as well as I can, but that doesn't help in the deck area at all. By the end of a single mow, the deck is completely caked with grass, about a half inch thick average. If I let this set, by the next mow the motors will overheat and give errors. Since we can't use water on the mower, much less pressurized water, to clean this out, it requires removing the deck to clean it out. This isn't a horribly difficult procedure, but it requires a lot of laying out on the shed floor to reach safety pins, fumbling with electric connections that are not well keyed to align by touch, and manipulating a heavy steel deck to get it out. Cleaning requires a nylon brush, a plastic putty knife, and a lot of elbow grease. Cleaning the grass clippings from the heat sinks under the motors is I think the most important piece, and also the hardest to do due to the design of the deck. Third, I found that grass also accumulates to the front of the deck, where the electronics and mechanics of the pedal control are located, and to a lesser extent on the rear drive motor housing + brake assembly. The front area is the most critical. A month or so back, my mower stopped driving; the deck would operate just fine, but pushing the "forward" or "reverse" levers did nothing. On occasion, the "reverse" lever would work for one herky-jerky lunge backwards. I sent it in to the shop, and by the time they took it off the transport truck there was nothing wrong. Same thing happened again yesterday. I ran into a review which mentioned the pedal area being a dust-and-mulch magnet, so went and looked. Reaching down and under to behind where the right pedal goes, I pulled out pounds of dried grass. I tried directly blowing this out, to no avail. The only way to clean it out was to reach in from the *left* side, across the mower, crook my wrist at a very uncomfortable angle, and pull the grass out. When I cleaned it all out by hand again the mower could again drive forward and reverse! I assume that riding on the back of the trailer to the shop a month ago had knocked enough of the grass clear for the actuator to start working again, but didn't actually clear it out enough. Finally, a few nits. I'm a fairly tall guy, and I find the seat doesn't go far enough back. After about half the back lawn, I need to turn it all off and hop off to stretch my legs. The lack of arm rests doesn't help with comfort either. The mulching kit's "plug" is horribly designed, not securing well enough to the deck to effectively block the grass until enough grass has caked on the inside of it to plug the large openings. The stock "turf" tires are just no good on any kind of a hill; replace those if you are going to use the snow plow attachment! The quietness of the motors leaves lots of room to hear the clacking and grinding of the rest of the machine (of course all that goes away when the mulcher blades start spinning). When things go wrong, you get "handy" error codes on the screen, but there is nothing published by Cub Cadet to decipher those codes. Sounds like a lot of gripes. But, overall, I really love this tractor. It has worked well through two mowing seasons (with only the above-mentioned issue), and one winter-plowing season. I did upgrade the back tires to improve traction on our driveway in the winter, and that helped a lot on navigating the hillside during the summer months as well. Being dead silent meant I didn't feel bad out on the plow scraping the driveway at 4am mid-winter. The battery is holding up well, with no signs of degradation over the course of the year. Definitely room for improvement, but this is a solid machine that does what it needs to do well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Errors in first 5 minutes [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought the LT42e yesterday, got on it today and after 15ft of mowing the blades shut off and showed error codes E228, then E222 then E108. Shut it down and tried again, right back to E228. I was so excited about this machine now I can’t explain how disappointed I am.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CUT 2 ARCES ON ONE CHARGE,IT,S A 5 STAR SO FAR [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I only had this about a month, I have no Major complaints, It,s a little rough riding, I,m cdutting about 5 arces total, It does what it says it will do, Cuts just as good with 5 % on the battery than it does on 100 % chargeSO far I,m impressed I was one that didnt want to go electric ,Think it would slow way down as the battery got lower, Like my e-bike does. Like I said I only had a month about three cuts that 15 arces , Ill update late if threres a problem or no problems Heres some pictues of what I cut uphill, downhill , woods, all gets cut, This is about 4.5 arces on two charges , But I,m 62 I tend to run out before the battery does , The dealership made my wife mad, But thats nothing to do with the mower proformance

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful to Use, but QC and Design Issues Generally, far superior ease of operation, quality of cut and speed of work compared to the two previous (gas) lawn tractors I've owned. I am particularly enjoying the easy maneuverability; my shoulders are most appreciative! After three weeks and four passes, I'm sold, and if it continues to function like this for its useful life I will continue to look forward to "the chore" every week. The quiet of no gas engine is highly appreciated though blade noise could be better addressed. There was a minor challenge learning the startup procedures. Aside from the various delays involved, error codes can be expected if you don't keep your mitts off the buttons during boot-up and systems self-check. Downsides are (mostly) trivial annoyances. LCD display is impossible to read in anything other than full sun or other direct light. Deck rattles... a lot, and loudly. 3-second delay to disable the backup blade lockout is too much - suggest 1 second with confirmation 'beep'; plus, the confirmation LED is blocked by your finger so you have to guess if you pressed it for long enough, only to wait again if not. Charger gets unusually hot and as an electronics engineer I am concerned about its longevity. QC: right side blade ("deck") motor turned out to be bad out of the box; overheats in ~30 minutes of operation even with little (or even no) load. Dealer and I have been puzzling through this, both of us originally thinking that my cut settings were too aggressive, but it turned out the left motor remained acceptably warm while the right motor became too hot to even touch. Dealer is great, by the way. I shopped area dealers for "the one" familiar with the LT42e; they themselves were enthusiastic users of the Cub Cadet electric products. Looking forward to a long and productive relationship.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from In shop for the last 1/4 year Cheaply built. Parts are scarce and backordered for months on end. Avoid. Warranty means nothing if you wait 1/4 of a year for parts. If you have to buy it, buy two, one to use and one for parts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sturdy, shaky while driving [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The mower looks beautiful, it's very quiet, easy to start and drive and it cuts the grass well. But it does shake a lot while driving and makes my back hurt within a few minutes. I can drive my old gas mower for 1 hour without any issues on the same lot. The steering wheel got unaligned after the first ride. To go straight you'd need to steer left. I tried to contact their customer support but it is a very difficult task! They keep redirecting 10-20 times which can take 20+ minutes before a real person answers. And then they can redirect you again without a notice...In the end a person (who was very irritated with my call and could not wait for me to hang up) just gave me a list of the near by stores that I need to take my mower to and they will figure out the rest. I just spent almost $5k on it (I also got an additional warranty for $400 to make things like this easier, but it's not easy at all) and have no way to get a support (I have no way to transfer the tractor to a store). I'd be happy to adjust my rating to 5 stars if I get some help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy buyer [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have never mowed our lawns this fast! We have fairly large lawn areas on our 20-acre property and we were able to mow most of our lawn on just one charge. It’s such a game changer having such a quiet mower as we can use it to haul things at night without annoying the neighbors. We are so happy and are encouraging everyone we know to make the switch to electric. So long dirty loud fuel engine! Cud Cadet knocked it out of the park!
